Like their name-sake, pop ups are advertisements that pop up on your monitor while you're on the internet. Its main purpose is to attract people to certain products or websites. Now while some pop ups can be useful a majority of them are just annoying and they can even be dangerous.

As I mentioned earlier, some pop-ups are useful. Sometimes they provide you with useful information. For example you could click on a link and a little window will pop up that will provide you with the information you need. Pop ups are also most commonly used in music sites as a specialized player window.

The pop ups that are dangerous are the ones that are either poorly programmed or intentionally malicious. For example, the coding could command it to open more pop ups when you close the first one. This cycle is endless and unfortunately the only way to stop the coding is to close the browser and lose anything that you might have been doing. Other malicious pop ups try to get you to click on them. Subsequently you might find your email distributed to spambots, or a spyware secretly installed into your computer. So don't simply click on any pop ups!

Now as annoying as pop ups may be, you generally don't need to worry too much about them. This is because most browsers now have some kind of pop up killers programmed into their system. If your browser doesn't already do this, then you should consider downloading and installing one that has an integrated pop up blocker or killer.

It's the nuisance factor of pop-ups that has encouraged almost every web browser.
