When people on the Internet talk about spam, they're not usually talking about the tinned kind you find in the supermarket. Here the lingo is often associated with unsolicited email. These emails usually contain some form of advertisement and it's sent in bulk using automated programs to millions of email addresses. The products offered can range from medicines, to get rich quick schemes and of course, pornography.

Spam is incredibly annoying simply because of the sheer number of it. When you get spammed, you don't just receive a handful of unwanted emails. You will get around 10 or 20 emails a day. And sometimes that number can even go into the hundreds. When this happens, it's not just a minor annoyance, it's a big problem.

Not worry, there are things you can do to reduce the amount of spam mails that you receive. There isn't a way to block spam out entirely yet, but with a little effort you can greatly reduce the number of spam mails that you receive every day.

Tips to block spam:

  • Some spam messages trick you into receiving more spam. When they say “Mail us to get removed from the list”, don't do it! It just confirms for them that your email address is a valid one and they'll just hit you with more spam.
  • Create separate email accounts for business, work, and yes, spam. Keep your main email address or work address private and clean. So when you sign up for mailing-list subscriptions and bulletin-board postings just use the ‘spam' email address and all spam should be directed there instead. It's a work around solution that will block spam out of your important email addresses.
  • Download and install spam filters. These programs can help you automatically detect, remove and block spam based on certain criteria. You can even customize these programs to make them more effective based on the type of emails that you usually receive.
  • Just watch what you sign up for. Unless you really need to sign up at a website, try to avoid keying in your email address. Sites that will offer you ‘more just by entering your email address' will most likely forward that address to the spambots.
